NZTBS / Taikata Sailing Club Kids Build

Fitting Some Copper Rivets to the Gunwale

In a Joint venture with Taikata Sailing club we have been running a week long course for a group of 9 year olds who are building a pair of John Welsford Scraps dinghies.

Under the expert guidance of Olaf Wiig and Alan Hooper the kids have been busy with all aspects of the build, wrapped around the boat building has been visits from Coastgaurd and Drowning Prevention Auckland, plus classes on knot tying and other nautical skills. They even got to paint their own sign boards for the dinghies.

It’s been an amazing week so far, these photos were taken Thursday 4 days into the build. Taikata Sailing Club by the water has been the perfect location for such a build. We learned yesterday that the last time small boats were built at Taikata was 1978, so its great to be bringing this back to the club.

The Two little boats will be launched this Saturday at midday with parents and friends. All welcome so if you’d like to see these kids projects and help celebrate the fun come along. Taikata Sailing Club, Chapman Road Te Atatu Peninsula.
