Sharpen and Set – Hand Tools

Primary focus in the course will be on hand planes, straight chisels, woodcarving and woodturning tools. Saws and saw blades.

If you have some old tools at home ie planes and chisels, spokeshaves or wood turning chisels, Bring them along and we’ll teach and help you to sharpen and set them up. If you don’t have tools yet don’t worry we have some you can practice on.

The course covers: The theory and practice of creating an effective sharp edge in high speed steel, the selection and use of grinding wheels, oil and water stones and buffs, slip stones and diamond hones to get that scary sharp edge.

The setting  of hand planes for different wood species, correct bevels for differing types of planes and chisels, Saws and saw blades, Hand saws, Circular saws and Bandsaws how to select the right saw for the job, The different types of saw teeth and how to choose the appropriate saw. how saw blades are sharpened and how to stay safe using circular saws, table saws and Bandsaws.
